Charlotte Tate

July 27, 2012

As associate director of the Rohatyn Center for International Affairs at Middlebury, Charlotte Tate is not prone to downplay her dedication to the College: “My Language School experience has remained instrumental in shaping my professional and personal life.” Indeed, her time at the German School allowed her to focus her career on international learning and administration, a path that she has followed for 20 years.

Cheerfully describing the rewards of her involvement with Middlebury language education, Tate declared, “Every year I’m reassured by the consistently enthusiastic and hard-working vibe I get from the Language Schools students.” As for the personal advantages of such an environment, “I frequently find the opportunity to speak German with students and colleagues.”

Tate’s cultural awareness and language skills have also granted her a means to infuse some international perspective into the lives of others. In addition to her work for Middlebury, she organizes overseas tours for choirs from the United States to such countries as Cuba, Prague, Barcelona, Portugal, and Italy.

“Although I haven’t studied extensively the languages of all those countries,” Tate reflected, “my knowledge of operating in a foreign environment equips me to execute tours, and I’m pleased to provide Americans with what is often their first, and possibly only, overseas experience.”

Charlotte Tate holds an AB in economics and German from Bowdoin College and an MS in administration from St. Michael’s College. She attended the Middlebury German School. Tate serves as associate director of Middlebury’s Rohatyn Center for International Affairs. An internationally oriented resource and research centerthe Center supports the College's goal of advancing global understanding. Tate creates programming to expand opportunities for students and faculty, disseminates current research through a Working Paper Series, and administers institutional grants in international studies, an undergraduate international research travel grant program, and a sponsored internship program.
