Language Schools Commencement Ceremony

Please note that we have two sites for Commencement.

For the Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Russian, and Spanish Language Schools at Middlebury (VT)

The 2018 Commencement Ceremony at Middlebury for Language Schools Master of Arts and Doctor of Modern Languages degree recipients will be held on Friday, August 17 at 4:00 p.m.

The Vermont Language Schools Commencement will be held in the Robison Concert Hall of the Mahaney Center for the Arts on Route 30. Students will line up with their school on the first and second floors of the Center for the Arts at 3:15 p.m.  Look for individual school  and DML signs. Someone from each School will be there to assist in lining up. It is important that students go promptly to this site as we only have thirty minutes to place students and faculty in correct order. Students should remain in line for the procession, which will begin at 4:00 p.m.

Please note that seating in the concert hall is limited and TICKETS will be required for this event. Each attending graduate will be given three tickets for entrance to the concert hall venue. There will also be overflow space, and any extra seats in the concert hall will be filled at 3:45 p.m.

Tickets for Vermont may be picked up at the Sunderland second-floor reception desk beginning  August 1.

Ample parking, including accessible spaces, are available at the Center for the Arts. Following the ceremony, there will be a brief reception in the lobby of the Center for the Arts to celebrate the graduates. All are invited to attend.

For the Arabic and Italian Language Schools at Mills (CA)

The 2018 Commencement Ceremony at Mills College for Middlebury Language Schools Master of Arts and DMLs will be held on Thursday, August 9 at 4:30 p.m. in the Littlefield Concert Hall.

General Commencement FAQs
How do I get my Cap and Gown?

All Language Schools MA and DML degree recipients are required to wear the traditional regalia (caps and gowns for all).

Middlebury: MA candidates should purchase regalia at the Middlebury College bookstore anytime from Wednesday, August 15, through Friday, August 17, at 2:00 p.m. The cost to purchase MA regalia is $46.50 (plus tax). The College bookstore is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

DML students may rent or purchase doctoral regalia through the Middlebury College bookstore. Doctoral regalia should be ordered by June 14, by contacting Sue Hebert at The cost of a rental cap and gown is $36 (plus tax). DML candidates will be given a doctoral hood during the ceremony.

If there is a valid reason for arriving late, graduates should contact Tania Bolduc, Senior Associate Registrar for Language Schools (802.443.5484 or to arrange for pickup of regalia. Some gowns will be available at the venue—for emergency purposes only. Graduates without regalia will not be allowed to participate in the ceremony.

Mills: Graduates at Mills only will order their caps and gowns online, through the Middlebury bookstore. Go to the Middlebury bookstore and click "Graduation Items." MA students will select Item 2005278, the MA Keeper Hood, and Item 2006563, the MA Keeper Unit. To avoid shipping charges, select "PICKUP ORDER," and the gown will be shipped to Mills for you. You must order MA regalia by July 12, to ensure delivery in time for graduation.

DML students at Mills will go to the Middlebury bookstore online and click "Graduation Items." Select Item 2008630 to rent your regalia, and click "PICKUP ORDER" to avoid shipping charges. The cost of renting will be $36, and students will be given a doctoral hood during the ceremony, which they may keep. Rental doctoral regalia must be ordered by July 12, to ensure delivery in time for graduation. DML graduates who prefer to purchase their regalia must contact Sue Hebert at the Middlebury bookstore by June 14 ( or 802.443.2673).

Am I required to attend commencement?

Graduating students are not required to attended commencement. If you indicated you would not be attending and you find that your plans have changed, let us know as soon as possible. Please contact the Registrar's Office at 802.443.5484 or by e-mail at

If I don't attend commencement, will I receive my diploma?

Students who are unable to attend the ceremony will receive their diploma approximately two weeks after the commencement date. They are normally sent via U.S. Priority Mail. If there is a change of address, please notify the Registrar's Office immediately.

What might prevent me from participating in commencement?

All Language Schools MA and DML degree recipients are required to wear the traditional regalia (caps and gowns for all).

All Language Schools tuition, extra course fees, miscellaneous fees, room and board fees must be paid in full in order for you to receive your diploma or an official transcript. Students abroad are responsible for seeing that their abroad fees have been paid.

Middlebury: Please make sure accounts are settled before 4:00 p.m. on August 10. The Cashier's office is located on the second floor of the Service Building.

Where can my family stay?

Housing for family and friends will not be available on campus. Graduating students are housed free of charge, if space is available in the dorm. Contact the coordinator of your School.

Are tickets required?

Tickets are not required for the Mills ceremony; see above for Middlebury.

Where can we park?

Visitors may park in any legal parking place on campus and on the public avenues bordering the campus. During the ceremonies, ADA spaces are available in Q Lot on Porter Field Road at the Mahaney Center for the Arts.

On the Mills campus, you will be given a guest parking pass as you enter from the Public Safety officers at the guard kiosk.  You may then park anywhere with the designation “Commuter Parking”.  The entire main road outside the Littlefield Concert Hall is designated this way.

Will there be an official photographer at the ceremony?

For your convenience, we have made arrangements with GradImages® for a professional photographer to record the moment you are awarded your diploma. Following the commencement ceremony, proofs of these color photographs will be sent to each graduate from the vendor. There is no obligation to purchase, and you will have the option of ordering from a variety of enlargement packages at very reasonable prices.
