Hello! My name is Alisella but you can call me Ali. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. When researching Middlebury, I felt slightly disconnected since I love to experience things first-hand. So, I applied to the Discover Middlebury Program and was flown out (free of expenses) from LA! This experience truly solidified my choice of Middlebury College because I got to sit in some classes, already form connections with professors, and meet upperclassmen. I would love to chat with you about my experience and provide some peace of mind if needed.

In five years, I plan to acquire a B.A. in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry and perhaps a minor in Psychology. I see myself going to dental school and becoming a dental oncologist or  pediatric dentist. On campus, I am involved in faith-based activities along with growing within a scientific community. Being at Middlebury College has taught me to consider all possibilities and that is what I enjoy the most about attending a liberal arts college!

Why did you choose to attend Middlebury?:

My application process to Middlebury College was unique. I first learned about Middlebury through my counselor, who introduced me to the Posse Foundation scholarship. As I went through the Posse process, I ranked Middlebury as my top choice because it offered the environment I was looking for—both personally and academically.

Coming from South Central Los Angeles, I longed for a calming atmosphere where I could focus on my studies and experience “firsts” like seasons. I was also drawn to Middlebury’s close-knit community. With a high school graduating class of just 98 students, I value the small class sizes that allow me to form meaningful connections with both faculty and peers. Applying Early Decision was one of the best choices I could have made for myself!

What is your favorite food in the dining hall?

I love the Mediterranean food that is usually served in Proctor Dining Hall. The falafel and the sauces are so good. Actually an out-of-this world experience. 10/10 recommend!

What advice do you have for students who are trying to decide whether to attend Middlebury, or an out-of-state private college?

At first, I was hesitant looking into out-of-state private colleges. I thought that they were something out of my reach, as a first-generation low-income student. However, Middlebury College’s website truly stressed that they were more than generous to meet people’s financial needs. In fact, I was gifted a laptop and health insurance upon my arrival here. Ultimately, it was surprising to learn that around 50% of students here are on financial aid. Knowing this was a big reliever, and after setting aside that big worry of mine, I was able to focus on Middlebury as a whole. The people, the experience, the academics all truly encompass what being a MiddKid is about.
