Why Should You Be Fluent in English?

Whether you’re learning English for school, work, or travel, being fluent can open up a world of opportunities.

You can communicate with people from different countries and cultures, expand your career prospects, and understand more of what you read or hear in movies or on the news.

Having good fluency also makes it much easier to express yourself clearly and accurately, which is especially important if you plan on using English for professional reasons.

But what does it actually mean to be fluent?

What Does Fluent in English Mean?

The meaning of fluent can vary depending on your goals.

Generally speaking, becoming fluent means you have an advanced understanding and can easily use the language. You may still make mistakes, but they won’t be frequent or severe enough to impede communication.

In terms of English fluency, a few essential qualities indicate whether or not someone is truly proficient in the language. These include:

  • The ability to understand native speakers without difficulty.
  • Vocabulary that is broad enough for most conversational topics.
  • Grammatical accuracy that allows for clear communication.
  • A mastery of idiomatic expressions and slang words.

When these qualities are present, it generally indicates that someone is fluent in English. However, fluency also depends on context.

If you are trying to communicate with a highly educated native speaker about complex topics, then your level of proficiency must be higher than if you were simply having a casual conversation with an acquaintance.

How Can You Tell If You’re Fluent In English?

The first step in determining your fluency level is self-assessment. Do you feel comfortable expressing yourself in English without feeling lost for words? Are you confident conversing with native speakers without feeling intimidated or overwhelmed?

If so, then chances are you’re already quite fluent!

Another way to assess your fluency level is by asking native speakers who know you well — like friends or family members — about your level of fluency.

They can provide an honest assessment since they know what kind of progress you’ve made since beginning your journey with the language.

The Different Levels of English Fluency

If you’ve set your sights on learning English, then it is vital to understand the different levels of fluency.

So, how long does it take to be fluent in English?

Understanding the different levels will help you set realistic goals for yourself and track your progress as you progress through each level.

To become fluent in English, there are three skill levels you should aim for: beginner, intermediate, and advanced.

The Middlebury English Language School is designed for students at the Low Intermediate, Intermediate, High Intermediate, and Advanced levels. Unfortunately, you cannot be a complete beginner. Let’s break down what each of these levels entails so that you can start your journey toward fluency with confidence.

Beginner

If you have never studied English before or have only taken a few classes, then this is the level where you should start.

At this level, learners will develop basic conversational skills in English by learning vocabulary words and phrases related to everyday topics such as family, home life, hobbies and interests, shopping, food, and drink preferences.

This is also the stage where students get to grips with basic grammar rules like verb tenses (present simple, past simple), subject-verb agreement, and singular/plural forms of nouns.

All of these will help them form sentences and understand simple conversations in English. It takes around 200 hours to reach a basic level of fluency at this stage.

Intermediate

Learners can easily understand most conversations about familiar topics and read texts at this level.

They should also be able to confidently hold conversations in English, but may still make some mistakes when speaking or writing longer pieces such as essays or reports.

At this stage, they will learn more complex grammar topics such as conditionals (if…then..), comparatives (better/worse than), modal verbs, adverbs, and passives to help them express themselves more accurately when speaking or writing in English.

It usually takes around 800 hours to reach a competent level at this stage.

Advanced

The advanced level is considered fluency because learners become highly proficient in English at this stage.

They can converse on any topic and understand almost everything they hear or read in English. They should also be able to write with style and accuracy, expressing their ideas clearly and confidently.

By the time a learner reaches the advanced level, they will have mastered all the grammar rules and a wide range of idioms to help them express themselves creatively in their written work.

It usually takes around 1,200 hours to reach this level of fluency.

How To Learn English in 30 Days

If you’re in a hurry, you can still implement some steps to learn English within 30 days.

It’s essential to have a plan of action and focus on the areas that need improvement to reach your goal.

If you’re attending Middlebury Language Schools, you have the advantage of being surrounded by native and fluent American English speakers and experienced faculty members who will help guide your language-learning journey.

Here are some tips on how to speak English in 30 days.

Step 1: Set Goals for Yourself

The first step is to set realistic and achievable goals for yourself. Do not try to do too much too soon. Start by setting small, attainable goals and gradually work up from there.

For example, if you want to be able to pronounce words correctly, begin by practicing one sound at a time until you can make it precisely every time. Once that is mastered, move on to the next sound until you can pronounce any word correctly.

Step 2: Practice Every Day

Practice makes perfect!

Make sure you practice every day for at least 20 to 30 minutes. This may mean listening to podcasts, watching YouTube videos in fluent American English during your commute, or taking an online course during lunch break.

If possible, find an English conversation partner who can help you practice speaking and give you feedback on how to improve.

The more often you practice speaking English, the faster your progress will be.

Step 3: Listen and Repeat

When learning a new language, listening as much as possible is essential.

Find podcasts or videos that discuss topics that interest you and listen carefully while repeating what they say aloud as often as possible.

Not only will this help with pronunciation, but it will also help increase your vocabulary because hearing words used in context will help them stick in your memory better than simply reading them out of a book.
