The Language Pledge®

What makes the Language Schools different is our Language Pledge®. The Language Pledge is every student’s commitment to communicate only in his or her language of study for the entire time in the program.

School in Italy

The School in Italy offers semester and year-long programs at all levels to college undergraduates in Florence. Students with a background in Italian commit to linguistic and cultural immersion by adhering to the Middlebury Language Pledge®.

Summer Italian School

The Middlebury Italian School is a summer intensive-immersion program in Italian for pure beginners to students seeking a graduate degree.

Students who want to improve their Italian (beginner to advanced levels) can apply to the 7-Week non-degree program and earn 9 credit-hours (3 Middlebury units of credit) in one summer.

Graduate Program in Italian

Students seeking a Master’s Degree (MA) or Doctor of Modern Language (DML) degree have multiple options to complete the degree, including attending the 6-week summer program over a series of summers, or a combination of summer study and an academic year at the School in Italy. Furthermore, there is generous need-based financial aid available.
