Craig Maravich is the Program Director of the Beyond the Page program and a member of the faculty at The Bread Loaf School of English. He has been a company member of the Bread Loaf  Acting Ensemble since 2010 and has served as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Theatre at Middlebury College. He has held teaching positions with The University of Vermont, St. Michael’s College, Hofstra University, and The Academy for Visual and Performing Arts. His work as a teaching artist in Vermont includes the development of several classes and community initiatives with The Flynn Center for the Arts, The Town Hall Theater, and The Community Engagement Lab. Maravich is the Co-Founder of Courageous Stage – a program that uses theatre arts to activate creativity in schools and communities across Vermont. As a practitioner, Craig’s work as an actor spans a professional career of 20 years and includes credits with leading theatres across the country. Craig is a recipient of a Vermont Thriving Communities Grant and the 2021 A. Bartlett Giamatti Award for Professional Development: bringing creative practices into Bread Loaf and Middlebury classrooms and, through that work, cultivating inclusive learning and teaching environments.  He received his MFA in Classical Acting from The Shakespeare Theatre’s Academy for Classical Acting/George Washington University.

Course Description

Making a Musical: Process and Performance
In this experiential course, students will rehearse and perform a musical at the Town Hall Theater in Middlebury, in collaboration with the college’s departments of Music and Theatre. Students with a passion for collaborative theatre-making and a desire to further their skills as actors, musicians, singers, dancers and designers will study alongside professional artists and educators from Middlebury College and beyond. This immersive and unique learning experience will be an opportunity to collaborate across artistic disciplines and to share artistic work with the broader Middlebury community. Participation in the course is determined by auditions held the previous term and requires instructor approval. Course Description

Acting I: Beginning Acting
Rigorous physical and psychophysical exercises attempt to break through the cultural and psychological barriers that inhibit an open responsiveness to impulses, to the environment, and to others. Attempt is made to free personal response within improvised scenes and, eventually, within the narrative structure of a naturalistic scene. Attention is given to various theories of acting technique. Students are expected to audition for departmental shows. (First- and second-year students only) 3 hrs. lect./individual labs

Course Description

Senior Independent Project
Senior work is required. In consultation with their advisors, theatre majors may propose a THEA 0700 Independent Project. Preliminary proposal forms approved by the student's advisor will be submitted to the program by March 1st of the preceding academic year for those wanting credit in the fall or winter terms and by October 1st for those wanting credit in the spring term. Projects will conform to the guidelines that are available in the theatre office. Students are required to attend a weekly THEA 0500/0700 seminar.
