Martin H. Freeman Lecture Series
Martin Henry Freeman was the first African American to graduate from Middlebury College in 1849 with a degree that led him to pursue a career in mathematics. Not only was Freeman the salutatorian of his graduating class, but he went on to become a Professor of Mathematics and later on President of Liberia College in Liberia. Freeman was a trailblazer, as he was the first African American President of a college. This Lecture Series was created to honor his memory by bringing established speakers from underrepresented backgrounds in STEM fields to share their research with the Middlebury College community.
