Beyond the Page is a program that brings theatre into classrooms and communities at Middlebury College. Through arts integration, we engage today’s pressing questions, solve complex problems, and foster a vibrant and joyful liberal arts campus.

Students in an Inclusive Ed class participate in a Beyond the Page workshop.

“This is transformation that happens in the moment.”

Undergraduate Classrooms

BtP develops workshops and supports curricula in over 25 different academic departments. We custom design arts-integration workshops and artist residencies transforming the classroom into a space of experiential learning. Using the tools of theatre—storytelling, movement, performance, writing, and ensemble-building—our work helps students and faculty to engage more deeply with what they are learning, experience their academic subject in a new light, and strengthen community in the classroom.

Fellowship Program

Our training program for students builds skills needed for teaching artists, facilitators, leaders, and educators. BtP Fellows are an integral part of the program, helping co-design workshops and campuswide events alongside professional artists, faculty, staff, and other college programs.

Bread Loaf Teacher Network

The Bread Loaf School of English (BLSE) is BtP’s inaugural home, and BtP serves as a resource to the Bread Loaf Teacher Network (BLTN). As the external arm of BLSE’s Theatre Program, BtP supports K-12 teachers in the Bread Loaf Teacher Network (BLTN) across the globe to further their innovative and transformative pedagogies.

Theatre Projects

Our interdisciplinary Civic Theatre Projects unite BtP artists, students, and local stakeholders in the pursuit of addressing complex problems. We use the process of making theatre as a framework for building and envisioning a more thriving community.
