Writing and Rhetoric Program

Writing and Rhetoric (WRPR) is an interdisciplinary program with faculty whose areas of expertise include composition, linguistics, rhetoric, and literature. We work with students whose goals include academic writing and research, journalism, social activism, education, and creative and multimodal writing. Our students have gone on to win writing awards, to work as peer writing tutors, to collaborate with us on scholarly and creative projects, to publish professionally and to pursue graduate studies in writing and related fields.

Our courses, which are often cross-listed with other departments and programs
(e.g., Environmental Studies; Gender, Sexuality & Feminist Studies, History of Art and Architecture, Linguistics) engage contemporary, socially relevant themes, and are designed to build students’ confidence, awareness of rhetorical conventions, and skills in writing. We employ inclusive and antiracist pedagogies designed to facilitate students’ sense of belonging and agency at Middlebury and offer opportunities for them to write for a variety of audiences and in a range of modalities.

Beyond our own courses, the program oversees and supports second level writing-intensive courses (CW) offered within the disciplines. We also engage with any faculty interested in conversations about writing and the teaching of writing. In collaboration with the CTLR and other offices and programs, the Writing and Rhetoric Program hosts a variety of events for faculty that pertain to writing pedagogy and to issues of difference and community in education, including the annual Teaching and Writing Retreat.

A critical collaborator with the Writing and Rhetoric Program is the Writing Center and its hubs. Here, we find Peer Writing Tutors working with students across the curriculum on their writing. In addition, designated Writing and Rhetoric Program faculty and professional staff offer one on one tutorials in critical thinking and writing for all students.
