Meet the current members.

Sofia Goerckde Carvalho Macedo

Sofia Goerck de Carvalho Macedo ’27 (MBBC)

I’m a senior MBBC major and Anthropology minor from Brazil. I’m currently doing research at the Spatafora Lab investigating protein interactions at the transcriptional and translational levels in dental carries-causing bacteria S. mutans.

Outside the lab I really like being outdoors and one of my favorite things at Middlebury is being part of the Equestrian Team.”

Esteban Catano Molina

Esteban Catano Molina ‘27 (MBBC)

I’m a senior, MBBC major, and I am from Colombia but recently moved to Vermont. Some of the activities I enjoy doing on campus are figure skating, which I do both for fun and competitively, and teaching English through a Biology and Natural Science approach to students who lack educational language access. I am currently in Professor Pask’s Lab working with fireflies, specifically studying olfactory receptor genes responsible for insect communication.

After school, I hope to work in a research-based lab and later apply to a PhD program in molecular biology, microbiology, or any other biological sciences while still exploring my passions.

Mattea

Mattea Fisher ‘28 (MBBC)

I’m a junior MBBC major with a statistics focus and Posse Scholar from Long Beach, CA. On campus, I enjoy playing cello in the college orchestra, online editing for The Campus, and being part of SPECS (Sex-Positive Education for College Students).

Outside of school, I love to read, crochet, line dance, and spend time with my friends.

MacKenna Morris ‘27 (MBBC and Computer Science) double major

I am a senior double majoring in MBBC and Computer Science, and I am from Durham, North Carolina. My research in Amanda Crocker’s lab focuses on how glial signaling and mitochondrial function shape the brain’s response to single and repeated traumatic injuries in fruit flies. After Middlebury, I am hoping to attend medical school to become a pediatric surgeon or oncologist.

Outside of BiHall, I love swimming and rowing, working at Crossroads, reading, and spending time outdoors—especially hiking, kayaking, and scuba diving.
