Beginning in Fall 2027, students will have the opportunity to study in English with Middlebury in Astana, the capital city of Kazakhstan. Sitting at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Kazakhstan offers a distinctive international experience in one of the world’s most fascinating and rapidly developing regions.

Nazarbayev University (NU), an internationally renowned research university in the capital city of Astana, has been hosting Middlebury’s students since 2023. An English-language university, students studying with Middlebury will have direct access to courses across many disciplines, including social sciences, education, and natural sciences. All students will be expected to take an introductory Russian or Kazakh language course, plus three electives in English alongside NU students from across Central Asia and around the world.

Students will live in dorms on campus with easy access to NU’s facilities, which include numerous libraries, cafes, modern recreation spaces, and athletic facilities. NU offers ample support for international students and many opportunities to get involved in a variety of extracurricular activities and cultural celebrations. In addition, Middlebury’s resident coordinator in Astana will organize cultural activities and excursions throughout the semester to support students in discovering all that Kazakhstan has to offer.
