Application Information
Paris Spring 2024
We are excited to see so many students interested in studying in Paris during the spring 2024 semester. Due to the high number of applications we are receiving for our Paris program, students who apply now will be put on a waitlist. Students might also consider applying to one of our other sites in France, or to our program in Cameroon.
Final deadlines for complete applications are as follows:

We will consider late applications if space is available, provided that visa deadlines (where applicable) can be met. Once the deadline has passed, you will not be able to access the application without first calling our office at 802-443-5745.
The Application Process
Applicants from other institutions must submit the following:
- A personal statement
- Passport copy
- An official transcript
- Study abroad advisor approval form
- Recommendations:
- For Language Programs (all but India and the UK): One recommendation, this must be from a recent language professor
- For India and the UK, two recommendations
- Writing sample in the target language
- $75 application fee (non-Middlebury students only)
General Requirements
For most programs, and unless noted below, students must have achieved an average of B or better in their major and language courses, and an overall average of B- or better.
All students are expected to enroll in a language course the semester prior to going abroad. If students do not have adequate language preparation, they may be required to attend the appropriate summer Language School prior to enrollment in a Middlebury School Abroad.
Heritage and native speakers may be considered for admission without meeting the formal language requirement upon approval of the director.
There is no language requirement for our Summer Programs.

Argentina |
Completion of 2nd year Spanish, plus one content course taught in Spanish. At Middlebury, this includes any 0300-level (or above) tagged with either a comparative or regional tag in addition to the language tag. Courses with only the language tag (i.e., SPAN 0301 Advanced Spanish Grammar, SPAN 0303 Intro. Spanish Phonetics and Pronunciation, and SPAN 00338 Advanced Conversation) do not meet the minimum requirement for study abroad. Intermediate Track: Completion of Intermediate Spanish I or Intermediate Spanish II, or the equivalent. Not available to Middlebury students. |
Brazil |
Completion of 2nd year Portuguese. |
Cameroon | Completion of 2nd year French, plus one content course taught in French. |
Chile |
Completion of 2nd year Spanish, plus one content course taught in Spanish. At Middlebury, this includes any 0300-level (or above) tagged with either a comparative or regional tag in addition to the language tag. Germany |
All students must have achieved B2 language proficiency. Middlebury students must have completed one 300-level content course taught in German; applicants from outside of Middlebury who have completed two years of German may also qualify. |
India |
Overall GPA of 3.0 required. No language requirement; university courses are taught in English. |
Italy |
Florence: Beginner Track: No prior Italian required; students expected to take Italian language courses and adhere to the Language Pledge. Not available to Middlebury students. Florence: Intermediate Track: Completion of 1st year Italian. Not available to Middlebury students. Florence: Advanced Track: Completion of 2nd year Italian. Content course taught in Italian strongly recommended. Rome (spring only): Advanced Track: Completion of 2nd year Italian, plus one content course taught in Italian. |
Japan |
Overall GPA of 3.0 required. Completion of 2nd year Japanese. |
Jordan |
Completion of 2nd year Arabic. (Middlebury students who will be meeting this requirement at the summer Arabic School must complete Level 2.5 or higher. For the spring semester, a fifth semester is strongly preferred.) |
