Dear Schools Abroad students –

I am writing with an update to the message I sent on March 17 regarding the Pass/D/Fail option for Schools Abroad students in spring 2020.  Late Friday afternoon, Provost Cason and other members of the College’s academic administration sent an update regarding the grading policy for spring 2020, including a time period when students will be able to revoke a Pass/D/Fail grade decision and return to standard letter grades.  Given this information, we at the Schools Abroad have also updated our Pass/D/Fail policy for this semester.  Students in the Schools Abroad will still have until one week prior to the end of classes (not exams) in your School to invoke the Pass/D/Fail grade.  Like the College, we have also added a window of time during which you may revoke a Pass/D/Fail request and return to standard letter grading if you choose.  Students will have until the last day of classes to revoke a Pass/D/Fail grade request.  This date will differ depending on your School Abroad and host university calendars.  The director of your School Abroad will confirm the dates for you.

As was noted in Friday’s memo from the academic administration, there will also now be a notation on students’ transcripts that will convey to outside audiences such as graduate schools and employers that a “P” should be interpreted as a reasonable response to these extraordinary circumstances, and not as indicating diminished rigor.

If you have any specific questions, please feel free to be in touch with the Office of International Programs. (internationalprograms@middlebury.edu).
