Professor Mercedes Rivas holds a Ph.D. and a B.A. in Hispanic Philology from the University of Seville. She has taught at the Middlebury College program since 2025. Her teaching career includes courses in Spanish Literature, Linguistics and Culture at different US programs in Spain, such as the University of Maryland, Emory University, and Colby University. She was Visiting Scholar at the University of Florida and The Ohio State University. In addition to her teaching career, since 1998 she has worked extensively as an editor in academic writing and has collaborated with Spanish art institutions. Her research interests include Spanish and Latin American Literature and gender studies from the Baroque to the 20th Century. She is the author of Literatura y esclavitud en la novela cubana del siglo XIX (1990).
