2022 Award Winners

The French and Francophone Studies department is delighted to award this year’s Stephen A. Freeman Prize for excellence in the study of French to Mingjiu Gao. Since arriving at Middlebury, Mingjiu has been an outstanding student in French, and has developed superior skills in writing and speaking French as well as in analyzing literary and cultural texts in French. She has written a wonderful essay on the genre of the rêverie in Rousseau, Baudelaire and Proust for one of her independent studies. She lived in the French house, studied abroad on Middlebury’s program in Paris and was active in French associations on campus.

And for the first time, the French and Francophone Studies department is delighted to award this year’s Joseph Hamblet MA’64 prize to Jennie Bob Bizal-Clark. Jennie Bob’s academic work has been excellent, she has just completed a compelling thesis in French linguistics on the perception of French and Francophone accents under the supervision of our colleague Gyula Zsombok. Jennie Bob has also been very active in French associations on campus, and she has co-organized the language tables during two academic years
