chateau with dandelions

Middlebury College and the Lois ’51 and J. Harvey Watson Department of French and Francophone Studies are pleased to recognize and celebrate the 100th anniversary of the construction of the Château on the Middlebury College campus.

Built in 1925 and modeled on the Pavillon Henri IV at le Château de Fontainebleau near Paris, the Château was the first “language house” in the country in which students pledged to speak only French. Over its 100 years, the building has been home to many faculty and students. Today, it houses the Grand Salon, classrooms, and French Department offices, as well as residential rooms for nearly 50 students. Downstairs in the former dining room is a small theatre where various language departments stage plays.
