Who is eligible?

  • Undergraduate students currently enrolled at colleges and universities other than Middlebury College
  • Students who attend the summer Language School and the School Abroad in the same academic year (fall, spring, or academic year following the summer)
  • The target language in the summer does not have to be the target language spoken on the program abroad. However, our program in the United Kingdom is excluded from this package.
  • This discount can not be combined with the Cason scholarship.

How to apply?

  1. Apply to the Language Schools and successfully complete the program before studying abroad.
  2. Apply to the Schools Abroad program of your choice (except for the United Kingdom).
  3. Email schoolsabroad@middlebury.edu to let us know you plan to apply to both programs.
  4. Receive a $3,000 discount toward the semester abroad. This will be in the form of a check and it will go directly to you after the study abroad bill is paid.

Why combine both?

Immersing yourself in a language during the summer in Vermont can significantly boost your fluency, confidence, and cultural readiness all before you set foot in your host community abroad. By studying at the Language Schools first, you’ll arrive prepared to engage more deeply in class and in your daily life.

Whether you’re aiming to live with a host family, take university courses alongside local students, or just get more out of your experience, this path sets you up for success.

  • Save $3,000 when you participate in both programs.
  • Accelerate your language learning in a proven immersive environment, gaining the equivalent of two semesters of language instruction in just one summer.
  • Start your semester abroad more prepared, confident, and culturally informed.
  • Earn academic credit from Middlebury through both programs.

“After completing the Middlebury Summer Language School in Arabic, I had fallen in love with the Language Pledge, and I could not wait to touch down in Amman and begin my academic year with Middlebury…With diligent and enthusiastic study, the level of understanding I shared with Jordanians with whom I interacted increased exponentially, and not just linguistic barriers, but also the cultural barriers dissipated.”
