A native of Beijing, Tao Hong received her BA in English Literature from Beijing Foreign Studies University in 1988, a Certificate in Applied Linguistics from the University of Warwick, England, in 1994, an MA in Chinese Linguistics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2000.  She was a Foreign Student Advisor and Administrator in the International Students Office at Beijing Foreign Studies University 1988-1993, and a lecturer of English from 1994-1998.  From 1998 to 2004, she taught all levels of Chinese at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Princeton University.  Tao Hong became the founding director of the Middlebury School in China in 2004 when Middlebury opened its program in Hangzhou, where she led the program until it was closed during the pandemic, in 2022.
