European Studies
The program in European studies seeks to enrich the understanding of Europe—its issues and its people—by combining the proficiency in one or more of the main languages spoken in this region with a solid interdisciplinary background in history, geography, politics, economics, literature and culture.
An integral part of the program is the study abroad in Europe, usually at one of the Middlebury C.V. Starr Schools Abroad in France, Germany, Italy, or Spain.
As an EUS major you will be exposed to an interdisciplinary understanding of issues related to Europe and its constituent countries. Through coursework at Middlebury and at the Study Abroad Program of your choice you will achieve a high level of linguistic and cultural competence. While spending a semester or a year in one of our Programs in Europe you will take advantage of the opportunity to enroll in courses along with French, German, Italian or Spanish natives, and to participate in various internship programs. At Middlebury you will take regional courses in various disciplines and participate in seminars on global issues.
