The Middlebury School in China, in cooperation with CET Academic Programs, offers three study abroad locations—Beijing, Hangzhou, and Kunming.
Suspension Due to Covid-19
The program in Kunming (only) has been suspended for the Fall 2021 semester. Please inquire about the Spring of 2022. We plan to run the programs in Beijing in Hangzhou in both fall and spring semesters, as well as the Beijing winter term.
Living with a Chinese roommate is one benefit shared by all School in China students in any of the locations. Challenging coursework and the Middlebury Language Pledge® round out a highly immersive program for the serious student of Mandarin Chinese.
The program structure, including housing with Chinese roommates, is designed to expose students to an environment that will build upon their foundation of Chinese while rapidly increasing their knowledge of the language and culture. Students enrolled in the School in China take all of their courses in Chinese, including content-based electives and the unique one-on-one tutorial.
Students use their language skills in a relaxed environment outside of the classroom and also have the opportunity to spend January term in Beijing preceding spring semester.
Hangzhou, the oldest site of the School in China, offers a broad-based curriculum in humanities, including history, art and literature, religious studies, foreign relations, and Chinese social issues.
The multi-ethnic city of Kunming, located in southwest China, attracts students interested in anthropology, social sciences, and environmental sciences.
Finally, as China’s capital and center for political, economic, and cultural life, the program in Beijing is designed for students with interests in political science, economics, and the arts.
