At Middlebury in Taiwan, students adhere to the Middlebury Language Pledge®, a commitment to speaking Mandarin Chinese for the duration of the program.

Living with a Taiwanese roommate or host family is one benefit shared by all Middlebury in Taiwan students. Challenging coursework and the Middlebury Language Pledge® round out a highly immersive program for the serious student of Mandarin Chinese.

The program structure is designed to expose students to an environment that will build upon their foundation of Chinese while rapidly increasing their knowledge of the language and culture. Students in Taiwan take all of their courses in Chinese, including content-based electives and the unique one-on-one tutorial. Qualified students may also pursue a credit-bearing internship.

While traditional Chinese characters are used in Taiwan, Middlebury’s program welcomes all students, regardless of which writing system they’ve used prior to joining the program. Faculty and staff are ready to offer additional support to those using (exclusively) traditional characters for the first time during their studies in Kaohsiung.

Location

Kaohsiung is Taiwan’s vibrant southern port city, with easy access to both mountains and the sea. The city’s tropical coastal setting and easy light rail system allow students to experience Taiwan’s urban culture, seaside lifestyle, night markets, and arts scene.
