Housing
Middlebury’s program in Taiwan offers students the opportunity to live with Taiwanese students or families.
Every student is either paired with a student from the host university in a dorm room, or with a host-family in a homestay. Taiwanese roommates and host-families are selected through an application process, and every effort is made to match Middlebury and Taiwanese students/families with compatible interests and habits. Living with a local roommate or family will offer opportunities to build lasting relationships and integrate into the life of Kaohsiung and the NSYSU campus.
Hear from Tiffany, a student at NSYSU, who spent three semesters living with Middlebury students in Kaohsiung:
“From the moment students arrived in Taiwan, I accompanied them in becoming familiar with the campus, understanding the surrounding living environment, and adapting to daily life in Taiwan. In our daily lives together, I introduced them to many aspects of Taiwanese culture and local life, such as visiting night markets, trying Taiwanese street food, using public transportation, participating in festivals, and traveling to different cities together. Beyond language exchange, we frequently shared our personal backgrounds, educational experiences, and daily habits. These sincere conversations gradually transformed our relationship from language partners into close friends who genuinely cared for and supported one another. What originally began as only a short six-month encounter became an enduring and meaningful connection through sincere companionship and communication. This experience made my university life far more fulfilling and helped me realize that the true value of language and cultural exchange is not simply about learning, but about building deep connections that transcend countries and cultures through genuine human relationships.”
