Initiating a Leave
Students are required to meet with a Student Success Dean prior to taking a Leave of Absence.
This meeting with your Student Success Dean is necessary to ensure that students have a full understanding of college policy and the opportunity to ask questions. Email studentsuccess@middlebury.edu to schedule a virtual or in-person appointment.
Typically, students are required to be on leave for a full semester before returning to Middlebury. Depending on the type of leave of absence, there may be conditions to return that your dean would like to discuss with you.
- Students receiving financial aid should meet with Student Financial Services to understand how their leave will influence their aid package prior to declaring their leave.
- International students must meet with International Student and Scholar Services to ensure that they remain in compliance and have a full understanding of the implications of their decision.
Please note:
- After June 1, students who change their fall semester status from full-time, on-campus to leave of absence will be charged a $500 late enrollment change fee.
- After October 15, students who change their spring semester status from full-time, on-campus to leave of absence will be charged a $500 late enrollment change fee.
- For students who elect to take a leave of absence during a semester in progress, student accounts will be credited according to the tuition refund schedule.
Information about the College’s Leave of Absence policies can be found in the Student Handbook.
After meeting with a Student Success Dean, students will then need to confirm their decision to withdraw or take a leave of absence by filling out the Undergraduate Withdrawal Request Form.

Mandatory Time Away
When students are placed on mandatory leave, college personnel will reach out to schedule appointments to notify students and discuss the terms of the time away before written communication is sent, whenever possible. The aim is to ensure that students can ask questions and receive guidance upon learning of their change in status. Written notification, including conditions that must be met prior to petitioning to return, will then be emailed to the student and the parent or guardian email address we have on file.
