Combined Degree Programs

Integrated Degree Programs - MIIS
In five years, students may earn a BA from Middlebury and an MA from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS). Middlebury College and MIIS have established several integrated degree programs in which students earn a combined BA from Middlebury and an MA from MIIS in five years. These integrated degree programs include four years of undergraduate work in a variety of majors at Middlebury, development of language proficiency and particular courses while at Middlebury, followed by one year of graduate study at MIIS. These programs are retroactively available to all Middlebury alumni who qualify. Please note that all interested Middlebury students must apply to and be accepted at MIIS through the normal MIIS admissions process.

There are currently five integrated degree programs:

  • International Environmental Policy (MAIEP)
  • International Policy Studies (MAIPS)
  • Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies (MANPTS)
  • Teaching of Foreign Languages (MATFL)
  • Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MATESOL)

Each degree has particular requirements to fulfill at MIIS, as well as requirements to fulfill at Middlebury to qualify for these degrees.

For Middlebury students wishing to pursue these integrated degree opportunities, there are three broad requirements to qualify:

  1. Coursework at Middlebury
  2. Language preparation
  3. International experience (where applicable)

Early Assurance Premedical Program

Exceptionally well-qualified students may be considered for a special early-admissions program during the sophomore year. Candidates for early assurance should be absolutely sure they want to pursue a career in medicine, should be sure of the medical school they wish to attend, and must demonstrate clearly how the early assurance program will benefit them in a significant way. They should be active and productive in extra-academic endeavors, and their academic performance should be excellent. Those who are selected as early-assurance candidates will complete their Middlebury B.A. in normal course prior to entering medical school and will be expected to maintain high academic standards throughout their Middlebury tenure. The following medical schools currently offer Middlebury students the Early Assurance option:

Albany Medical School
University of Connecticut
Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth
University of Rochester
SUNY Buffalo
SUNY Upstate
