The Latin American Studies (LAS) major offers a mix of disciplinary approaches and language training to focus on the study of Latin America. With a broad foundation in the humanities and social sciences, our program exposes students to the region’s cultural, economic, historic, political, and social dimensions through the prism of two of its primary languages.

LAS majors obtain a broad understanding of Latin America through five regional courses spanning at least three academic departments, study abroad in Latin America, and advanced language and cultural training.

As an IG/LAS major, you will study under faculty with regional specializations encompassing the Andean Ridge, Brazil, Caribbean, Mesoamerica, the Southern Cone, and Mexico. You will develop the tools to understand Latin America on its own terms, and its place in a contemporary, globalized word. Finally, you will develop advanced proficiency in either Spanish or Portuguese through coursework at Middlebury College and at one of Middlebury’s C.V. Starr Schools Abroad in Latin America.
