COVID-19: Essential Information

Musical Theater

Each year the department puts on a student musical during the Winter Term in January. These performances are partially supported by the  Christian A. Johnson fund and the Jean Berger Discretionary Initiative of Middlebury College. They are performed at the town of Middlebury's Town Hall Theater. 

The Light in the Piazza - 2020

Les Miserables was a smashing success, performed at the end of Winter term 2014. It was directed by Doug Anderson; Musical Director: Carol Christensen

Into the Woods was performed January 24 - 27, 2013. It was directed by Doug Anderson; Musical Director: Carol Christensen; Conductor: Tim Guiles.



Hairspray was performed January 25 - 29, 2012. It featured Nejla Calvo '12 as Tracy Burnblad and Nathaniel Rothrock '13 as Edna Turnblad. Doug Anderson, Director; Carol Christensen, Musical Director; Tim Guiles, Conductor. Watch a film about the making of the show.

 "Hairspray" program

The January, 2011 musical was Urinetown.

Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, this is an irreverent musical satire about corporate corruption and greed, social engineering, sustainability, homelessness, and love.

The Wild Party, directed by Doug Anderson, musical direction by Carol Christensen, with Dick Forman, orchestra conductor, was performed January 22, 23, 25, 26, 2010 at Middlebury's Town Hall Theater.

New York in the 1920s is captured in Andrew Lippa's jazz musical from 2000. Adapted from a book-length poem written by Joseph Moncure March in 1928, The Wild Party tells the story of the reckless relationship between two vaudeville performers who decide to throw a party to end all parties.
