Study Abroad Transfer Policy
The Philosophy Department recognizes the value of Middlebury’s Study Abroad Program and has developed a policy to help guide students and their advisors as they plan their study abroad courses in conjunction with their philosophy major requirements.
-
Students who study abroad will normally be able to apply up to two courses abroad towards the major requirements. In all cases, approval for credit must be obtained from the Department.
-
Distribution requirements within the major (ELMMS, ESP, HIST) may be satisfied by courses taken during study abroad. Approval for major distribution credit rests with the Department Chair in consultation with appropriate faculty in the relevant field and the student’s faculty advisor.
-
No more than one course from study abroad can be used to fulfill a 300-level major requirement. Determinations of whether or not a course translates into a 300-level are made by the Department Chair.
-
Neither 710 nor the 400 level requirement can be satisfied by study abroad classes.
-
All such courses from abroad that may be appropriate for consideration within the major should be selected in conversation with the student’s academic advisor. Final approval of a course happens upon return from abroad and is granted by the chair. Please keep the syllabus and reading list.
-
Students should note that many courses that have been taken abroad at popular programs are already listed within the Department as satisfying certain major requirements. In such cases the approval process is quite straightforward.
Philosophy Minors
Philosophy minors who study abroad will normally be able to apply up to two courses abroad towards the major requirements. In all cases, approval for credit must be obtained from the Department.
