About Us
Studying in Oxford means becoming part of a centuries-old academic tradition - but it also means discovering a vibrant, modern student city full of ideas, culture, and opportunity.
About Middlebury-CMRS Oxford
Based in Oxford at St Michael’s Hall and academically connected with Keble College, the programme offers a close-knit environment where you’ll enjoy access to the wider intellectual and cultural life of the university city.
A little background
The Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies (CMRS) was founded in 1975 with a simple goal: to give students an immersive humanities experience in Oxford. Over time it developed a strong reputation for thoughtful teaching, rich academic resources, and a distinctive approach to studying abroad.
In 2014, CMRS joined the Middlebury Schools Abroad network. This expanded the academic scope beyond medieval and renaissance studies to a wider range of humanities subjects, languages, and some social sciences - while keeping the personalised, academically focused atmosphere that students value.
What your experience can include
Expect a balance of independence, academic challenge, and community support:
- Small, discussion-focused courses taught by Oxford-connected scholars
- Associate membership at Keble College and access to outstanding libraries
- A friendly programme community alongside the broader Oxford student experience
- Cultural events, excursions, and plenty of opportunities to explore the UK
Many students find they leave Oxford not only with stronger academic skills, but also with greater confidence, independence, and a lasting connection to the city.
M-CMRS is closely supervised by an academic board of college and university faculty in both the US and UK, to ensure that academic standards promote integration of students into the Oxford environment.
Middlebury-CMRS is part of the Middlebury College UK Trust, a charitable non-profit-making company.
