Bernard has been an evening circulation specialist with Middlebury Institute Library since 2024. In the past, he has worked in a wide variety of fields, including retail, landscaping, and website testing. He has also assisted at conventions, removed and installed flooring, served as a tutor, and day traded foreign currency. Bernard has even been employed in a different library than this one. His current 9-5 job is in data analytics, which isn’t nearly as interesting as it sounds. (Unless you like spreadsheets—then it’s actually pretty interesting.)

Bernard’s hometown is Stockton, California, one of the most ethnically and racially diverse cities in the United States. It has a great food scene that naturally stems from its diverse population. Part of Raiders of the Lost Ark was filmed in Stockton, which gives it some “cool points,” but on the minus side, the weather there is frequently terrible.

Leaving Stockton to attend CSUMB, Bernard majored in business administration. He believes that a person should never stop learning and is constantly trying to figure out how to do different things. If he finds he has little talent in a particular area, however, he cheerfully moves on to something else. (In his estimation, learning and knowing things are sometimes even more fun than doing things.) These days, he is working on picking up Spanish, which seems to be going reasonably well—so far.

He enjoys the outdoors, sports, and reading sci-fi/fantasy. He would say he is an avid reader, if you count audiobooks, manga, light novels and manhwa. If not, then he reads … sometimes. His favorite adult level book is Neuromancer, but One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish is still a heck of a lot of fun to read out loud.

Feel free to stop by and ask Bernard for recommendations on sci-fi books, places to eat in Salinas, or a fun random fact. Also, please let him know if you know of a good place to get bánh mì in the Monterey area.
