Sieun Lee became a Korean-English interpreter and translator in 1991 when she earned an MA in interpretation from the Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Korea. In the same year, she began teaching at Hanyang Women’s College where she found her passion for helping students build language skills. While maintaining a busy schedule as a freelance interpreter and translator working for diverse government and industry clients, she has continued to teach classes to share her knowledge and skills with her students.

In 2007, Lee came to the U.S. with her family and studied as an advanced-entry student at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies for another MA in Translation; three years later, she joined the Institute faculty. Becoming a student once again in the middle of her mature career was an enlightening experience for her as an educator. Thanks to this experience, Lee has become a teacher who better understands students’ expectations and strives to approach teaching from their perspectives.

Aside from Translation and Interpretation degrees, she also holds an MS in Instructional Science and Technology. She makes use of many latest technologies in her classroom to make learning more creative and engaging.

Areas of Interest

Sieun’s interpretation and translation assignments have been diverse, but her expertise lies in medical, legal and market research sectors among others. She has, for example, simultaneously interpreted hundreds of focus group discussions for various multinational businesses, and translated/interpreted for many law firms and medical centers. Her advanced translation workshops at MIIS specifically handle complicated legal and medical documents to help students develop basic skills needed to complete these challenging translation works.
