Three weeks into the fall semester, and it is apparent that all of you — students, faculty and staff alike — are working out the kinks of our new hybrid learning environment. I appreciate the grace that you have so repeatedly extended to each other as we get this semester underway. And of course, we continue to focus on the safety of our campus community and I am grateful to all of you for following the numerous protocols that have been put into place.

It has been wonderful to see and hear the buzz of teaching and learning in classrooms this past week. Despite a few bumps here and there, the campus reopening has been smooth. We’d like to thank you all for your contributions to making the reopening a success and to remind you of the important measures we ask you to take to keep our community safe.

It’s showtime! After months of preparation, we open our doors for the fall semester this Tuesday, September 7. There has been a lot of new guidance, procedures and policies announced over the summer and I thought it would be useful to refresh your memory as we start a new academic year.

Next week we welcome new and continuing students, both remotely and in-person. As we approach the start of the fall 2021 semester, it is imperative that all members of the campus community are in compliance with our mandatory vaccination policy. This policy is a critical component of our plans to keep the campus safe. As such, the bulk of my weekly update has to do with getting compliance to 100%.

I have an important addition to our health and safety rules to share with you today.
Mandatory Indoor Masking. Effective Monday, August 20, masks must be worn in all indoor spaces by everyone on campus, both vaccinated and unvaccinated (who have an approved medical or religious exemption). This requirement applies to students, faculty, staff, contractors, and any approved visitors in all areas, including classrooms, offices, and common and public spaces inside campus buildings and Munras Housing. Masks are not required in single-occupancy private offices or single-occupancy Munras Housing rooms. Graduate assistants and other employees working in common areas or at reception desks should be masked.
