In this discussion, we look at the ways imagery in photography and video is constructed to portray cultural stories and value systems through specific treatments of the human body and objects, and how these can be “read” or harnessed to communicate certain aesthetic, ethical or political goals. Images tell stories about what a culture values, and communicate implicit mandates through a variety of cultural lenses. Exercises on perception help demonstrate new ways of seeing.
