The Tlingit people have called the vibrant coastline of Southeast Alaska home for over 10,000 years and continue to practice a way of life intimately tied to the ocean and the largest remaining temperate rainforest on earth. Now, contamination from industrial mining is threatening the safety of the wild food sources that make Alaska so unique.
Join filmmaker Connor Gallagher for a screening and talk about his film, Irreparable Harm.
Xootsnoowú (Fortress of the Bears in Tlingit) is protected as Admiralty Island National Monument, and is home to the Alaska Native village of Angoon. Greens Creek Mine, one of the largest silver producers in the world, is located thirty miles north of the village, and as the sole mine in the nation operating within a national monument, is required to comply with the law that no irreparable harm can befall the monument and its values. Independent environmental sampling commissioned by conservationists and Alaska Native communities has revealed that since the mine went into production, toxin levels have increased dramatically in important food sources and are above safe levels for human consumption.
Irreparable Harm gives powerful voices to the Alaska Native communities and conservation groups demanding that Greens Creek Mine and State and Federal agencies develop new monitoring and treatment of waste, and mitigate past damages before it’s too late.
About the Speaker
Connor Gallagher is a freelance professional cinematographer and photographer based locally in Pacific Grove, CA. A native Vermonter, he was drawn to the Monterey Bay for its lush undersea kelp forests and amazing sea life. Connor has dedicated his career to protecting the natural world and has worked on documentaries for National Geographic, Mission Blue, Discovery, PBS, and Stanford University.

Lecture Location: McGowan 102
The McGowan Building is located at 411 Pacific Street, Monterey, CA, 93940, on the campus of the Middlebury Institute of International Studies. Attendees should enter through the glass doors from Pacific Street, and room 102 is located inside to the right.
Parking
Parking is available in any Middlebury Institute campus lot after 5 p.m., or on the street (time limits on surrounding streets end at 6 p.m.)
