Jayson Fann Bamboo Nest Lecture-Slideshow

Jayson Fann, visual artist, global musician, producer and educator, builds a Bamboo Nest interactive installation on the Middlebury Institute campus at Simoneau House, April 9-17 with events continuing through Earth Week and mid-May. The residency features a slide lecture about environmental and intercultural arts on Thursday, April 12, 7-8:30 p.m. at McGowen MG 100 with conversationalists Professor Beryl Levinger, Director of the Arts at Middlebury Pieter Broucke, and Airon Whitt ’19. Fann will also be part of the Spring Arts Series Finale on Friday, May 4 with ethnomusicologist and musician Damascus Kafumbe and friends for an outdoor African Soundscapes fest near the sculpture, 2-4 p.m. on the Holland Street Patio. The NEST project and residency is sponsored by the Johnson Visual Arts Residency Program Fund at Middlebury College, and hosted by the Committee on Art in Public Places at the Institute and the Fund For Innovation Spring Arts Series. Fann, a long-time Big Sur artist, has created over fifty nests across the U.S. His work in both music and sculpture has been featured in numerous magazines and articles, with global appeal. Fann generously combines his creative projects with art education, teaching in area schools and involving students in building the inspiring nests as well as hosting intercultural music and dance projects. Working with sustainably harvested eucalyptus and bamboo, the NESTS and his current interactive installation both link us to our home environment and transcend beyond. As described in a NY Times article, his woven sculptures are “Inspired by birds, built by humans.”
