Experience the Monterey Bay through the Eyes of Early California Artists
Join the Authors of a New Book that Celebrates the
Rich Artistic Past of Our Region
Book Synopsis:
Co-authors Dr. Cynthia Wagner Weick and Artist Joaquin Turner have created an accessible hands-on book which allows readers to experience the Monterey Bay through the eyes of 22 renowned artists. Preserving Nature: A Field Guide to the Art and Artists of the Monterey Bay outlines a self-guided tour of the scenes the artists painted in the late-19th century through the mid-20th century: in Monterey, Asilomar, Pebble Beach, Carmel-by-the-Sea, and Point Lobos. Location and biographical details allow readers to stand on or near the spots that inspired the artists, learn about each artist, and explore their roles in crafting the region’s rich artistic fabric.
Author Bios:
Dr. Cynthia Wagner Weick is Professor Emeritus at University of the Pacific, where she taught in the business and engineering schools for 27 years and authored over thirty articles and books. Weick has a lifelong interest in art and art history, and now resides in Carmel-by-the-Sea.
Joaquin Turner is an award-winning artist, gallerist, and Monterey County native. Turner’s work casts the region’s landscape in a light that recalls the paintings of early area artists, including Charles Rollo Peters, William Ritschel, and Percy Gray. His Carmel gallery features both his work and the work of important early California artists.
