Chris Nemarich is an International Policy and Development student with a focus in Monitoring and Evaluation. Originally from Maryland, he is getting used to being close to a bay that is not polluted and safe to swim in, though he still thinks the water is way too cold. He is passionate about the environment and is making attempts at going zero-waste, much to the chagrin of plastic-straw users in his vicinity. Chris graduated from St. Mary’s College in 2012 with a B.A. in Mathematics and will begrudgingly figure out how to split the check for the table if you ask nicely. Following graduation, he joined the Peace Corps, serving in The Gambia as a Math and Science Teacher Trainer in the capital, Banjul. Being white, male, cis-gendered, and straight, he is trying to deconstruct his point-of-view and understand how racism and privilege have shaped his views and outlook. He hopes that Allies at MIIS can be a place where he can find his blind spots and work to overcome them, learning techniques of awareness and humility that he can take with him into his career in international development.
