A former intelligence analyst for the Navy and the proud winner of a calligraphy competition, Lauren Gilmore identifies as an American, white, female graduate student. Although her story began in Wisconsin, Lauren defines home as the location she currently resides. In her second semester, she studies International Policy and Development, but she’s looking to make a transition to the Master’s in Public Administration. The impetus behind Lauren’s participation with Allies at MIIS lies in her desire to change the current environment at MIIS so that more people are aware and open. An ally is someone who is accepting, respectful, and patient with change. Recognizing the existence of problems and striving to help others is the essence of an ally. Lauren thrives in the unique learning environment created at MIIS that brings international and domestic students together in the classroom. Lauren appreciates professionalism and the commitment of professors to professional success. This internationally focused microcosm influences her ambition as an Ally to make all students at MIIS feel they share these opportunities.
