Shaun Richards is a Research Associate at the Center for the Blue Economy (CBE). Shaun joined the CBE team after completing the International Environmental Policy program at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS) with a focus in Ocean and Coastal Resource Management. He developed a connection with the CBE early in his coursework working with the center on several projects including a paper published in the Journal of Ocean and Coastal Economics on the Market Transfer Effect in the Hawaiian Longline Swordfish Fishery and a collaborative study with Oceana on the economic value of anchovies in the Monterey Bay. He spends most of his time currently looking at the intersection economic indicators, storm events and sea level rise.

Prior to MIIS, Shaun served as a Water and Sanitation Engineer in Panama with the Peace Corps working on the construction of gravity-fed aqueducts, biological sand filters, and composting latrine design. He holds a degree in Biological Systems Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University where he studied ecological restoration modeling and design. He recognizes the importance of bridging the gap between science, policy and decision making and loves working in Monterey where there are so many institutions at the forefront of ocean and coastal research.

Shaun also loves music, especially anything with a horn section, he will most likely be found with headphones on. So feel free to drop by if you have (or want) some recommendations.
