Shinae Meylor is an International Policy and Development student with a certificate in Terrorism. She spent a majority of her adolescent years in Trinidad where she experienced the Island’s development. She recalls having to fetch water from a community stand pipe to now having plumbing in every home. She is also supporter of rain bathing, she calls it the greatest childhood memories along with her Justin Bieber fever. She moved to the U.S. permanently at age 11 where she first experienced racism. Dealing with discrimination and micro-aggressions is a constant part of her life. To combat these issues, Shinae strives to bring awareness to people who either ignore or deny racial inequity. Her time spent as diversity chair in Rwanda where she served as a Peace Corps volunteer gave her a platform to enlighten Peace Corps of the racial discrimination that people of color endured daily. As part of Allies at MIIS, she hopes to continue to educate others on racial inequity, while discovering new ways to address these issues in order to reach a wider audience. Shinae believes in a better tomorrow if we work towards the same goals.
