About the Topic
The US Caribbean, comprised of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, is home to over three million people and is already experiencing the devastating impacts of climate change firsthand. Hurricanes, increasingly powerful storms, and rising sea levels are already harming human health, ecosystems, water and food supplies, and critical infrastructure, with underserved communities suffering disproportionate impacts. This talk, presented by Amanda Leinberger, University of Arizona, will provide an overview of the US Caribbean Chapter of the recently released Fifth National Climate Assessment (NCA5), with a focus on Key Message 5 of the Chapter, Adaptation Effectiveness Increases When Coupled with Strategic Governance and Planning. Amanda will also talk a bit about the process of pulling together this report, what has changed in this chapter since NCA4, and what some of the key takeaways for the US Caribbean region are in terms of adaptation and resilience.
About the Speaker
Amanda Leinberger is a third generation Tucsonan who joined the Center for Climate Adaptation Science and Solutions as the Adaptation Program Manager in January 2018. Prior to coming to the University of Arizona, Amanda spent two years in San Juan, Puerto Rico as a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Management Fellow working with the Puerto Rico Coastal Zone Management Program on projects related to climate change and coastal resilience. She is a co-author of the US Caribbean Chapter of the Fourth and Fifth National Climate Assessments and of Puerto Rico’s State of the Climate Report 2014-2021. Amanda co-led the organization of the inaugural Southwest Adaptation Forum (SWAF) and is currently leading the Southwest Practitioners Adaptation Network (SPAN), a network of networks for adaptation and assessment practitioners in the Southwest region.
