Preparing the Coast of California for Sea Level Rise: Science-based Policy and Guidance

Speaker: Ella McDougall, Climate Change Program Manager at the Ocean Protection Council

About the Topic

The Ocean Protection Council (OPC) leads California’s coastal resilience efforts by translating cutting edge science into applicable policy and guidance. This helps local governments, practitioners, and managers understand and implement best practices for adapting to Sea Level Rise (SLR). OPC is involved in two ongoing projects that exemplify this work. The first is the State Agency Sea-Level Rise Action Plan, a collaborative roadmap that outlines how California state agencies will work together to prepare our coastlines for SLR and its associated impacts. The second is the updated State of California SLR Technical Guidance, to be released in 2023. Based on new scientific findings on SLR projections, OPC is working with the Ocean Science Trust and a team of scientific advisors to downscale climate and SLR models for the California coast to update water height and sunny day flooding projections. The Guidance will also include updated priorities and strategies for adaptation planning.
