Headshot of Professor Ryuko Kubota

Critical content-based instruction (CCBI) integrates critical pedagogy and content-based instruction. This talk discusses what CCBI may look like by presenting an example of an advanced Japanese language course on “Memories of War” and critically reflects on some challenges of CCBI by drawing on an incident that occurred in a TESL methods class.

In CCBI, it is important for teachers to be aware of the possible imposition of a specific view. Previous research on teaching about controversial issues and poststructuralist approaches to pedagogy offers important insight. CCBI and any other teaching approaches require teachers to employ greater openness, tolerance, and hyper-self-reflexivity.

Ryuko Kubota is a Professor in the Department of Language and Literacy Education in the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. She has also taught ESL/EFL/FL teacher education and Japanese as a foreign language in the Unites States and Canada, including at MIIS. Her research focuses on topics in critical applied linguistics including race, gender, culture, language ideology, and critical pedagogy.

This event is part of the Leo van Lier Lecture Series.
