Highlights of recent activities by the faculty and staff of the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies include the following:
CNS Director William Potter presented a briefing on “New Nonproliferation Education and Training Techniques” to IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano and his staff in Vienna on January 26. CNS Assistant Director Elena Sokova and CNS Alumnus Liviu Horovitz also participated in the briefing. Education has long been a major interest of the Director General, who served as Japan’s representative on the UN Experts Group on Disarmament and Nonproliferation Education.
CNS Director William Potter delivered the luncheon keynote address at the IAEA-sponsored Seminar on “Strengthening Nuclear and Radiological Security in Asian Countries. The seminar was held January 21-22 in Tokyo.
CNS Director William Potter and Deputy Director Patricia Lewis made presentations at the Diplomatic Workshop on “Working Toward a Successful 2010 NPT Review Conference,” convened by the 2010 NPT Review Conference President-designate Libran Cabactulan in Manila February 1-2, 2010. Potter spoke about the “Implications for the Review Conference of the U.S.-Russian START Follow-On Agreement” and Lewis addressed the theme of “Disarmament Verification.” A highlight of the workshop was a luncheon at the Malacanan Palace hosted by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo of the Philippines.
Gaukhar Mukhatzhanova, Research Associate at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, published an article (in Russian) on Russia and Iran on the Voice of America web site.
The cover story for the January/February 2010 issue of Arms Control Today is by CNS Senior Associate Dr. Jonathan Tucker. It focuses on “Seeking Biosecurity Without Verification: the New U.S. Strategy on Biothreats.” A link to the article is posted under Recent Features on the CNS home page.
Jing-Dong Yuan, director of the East Asia Nonproliferation Program at CNS, was quoted by Agence-France Presse in an article about the effects of the pending US arms sale to Taiwan on efforts to discourage China from supplying Iran with nuclear technology.
