Over the past year, CTEC has hosted eight undergraduate interns from Middlebury College. Coming from a wide array of academic and personal backgrounds, CTEC’s interns tackled a number of different topics in extremism and terrorism. In the next few months, CTEC will publish their work, starting with this fascinating essay by Michael Taylor.
In The Prestige Cost of Right-Wing Extremism, Michael asks the question, “Is American far-right extremism linked to the reputation of the United States abroad?” In pursuit of an answer, Michael measures the sentiment of Russian-language social media content in relation to the frequency of American RWE events. Along the way, Michael produces a brand-new Russian-language sentiment analysis lexicon, untangles the long history of Russian exploitation of American racial conflict, and shows some good-looking charts.
