How I Got Hired: Senior Analyst, U.S. Government Accountability Office
MPA graduate Matthew Levie describes how coursework, internships, and support from MIIS faculty helped him on the path to becoming a senior analyst for the GAO.

Guillermo Rivero has more than 20 years of managerial and consulting experience working with international development organizations, local non-profits, and private companies. His passion involves working with impactful NGOs and pattern-breaking businesses that contribute to the common good. In supporting organizational transformational processes, he has led change management initiatives, strategic planning processes, activity- based costing models, integrated financial plans, organizational sustainability efforts, and business development strategies.
Through initiatives funded by governmental agencies, private foundations, and multilateral donors including USAID, DfID, International Finance Corporation/World Bank, The Nature Conservancy, and SNV, Rivero has provided advisory services, technical assistance, and training in 20-plus countries of Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
Rivero teaches finance classes that combine sound theoretical financial principles, real-world decision-making situations, and active student engagement. He also teaches at Catholic University of America (Business Enterprise & Development and Nonprofit Management). In the past, he has also taught at Marymount University, University of Maryland – CIBER, Washington State University, and Tecnológico de Monterrey. He has co-authored six books and written several articles on organizational topics.
Currently, he works at Helen Keller International as Director for Finance and Budget. He has previously held managerial positions with Pact, Root Change, Telefonica, and DHL International.
Financial management, nonprofit effectiveness, social entrepreneurship, strategic management, international business, venture creation, and capacity building.
Professor Rivero has been teaching at the Institute since 2008.
