Assistant Professor of Professional Practice, Localization Management
Professor Bregman is a seasoned localization-industry professional, experienced in all aspects of localization management, including language and engineering management. With over 25 years in the localization and internationalization field, with 20 of those in Silicon Valley, he is especially well-versed in localization and internationalization engineering, digital content engineering, process engineering and automation, among others.
Professor Bregman holds a Master of Arts degree in Chinese Studies (Chinese Languages, Culture, History, Politics and Economics), from Leiden University in the Netherlands, with a minor in Business Administration. Having spent most of his free time in university learning about computers and working as a freelance software developer, he was happy to eventually discover the field of Localization, which allowed him to combine his love for languages and interest in computers and make it into a career.
He worked on the vendor side as the Chief Representative of the Beijing, China office of WordHouse Localisation, before moving to California, and working on the client side at eBay, as Senior Localization Engineering Manager. During this time, aside from leading the engineering efforts for all production work and site launches at eBay, he also consulted with sister companies like PayPal, Skype and StubHub on localization management and best practices. After that, he worked at Rivian Automotive, as the Localization Architect.
Now focusing on education, Prof. Bregman is excited to share his experience and knowledge of the technical and engineering aspects of localization with the MIIS TLM students, and make them feel confident and empowered to bring the discussion on localization process needs and requirements to the product development teams, with an understanding of the technology and vocabulary to help build the bridge between language and technology.
He is especially excited about the prospect of teaching at MIIS, not in the least since he had the good fortune to work with many amazing MIIS TI/TLM graduates over the years, as language specialists, language managers, project managers, and team managers.
Prof. Bregman’s favorite activity is travelling to other countries, and learning about the people, their language, food and culture, especially with his family. When travelling to far-away places is not an option, his next favorite activity is cooking, exploring Asian cuisines in particular. Other areas of interest include reading up on Science and Technology topics, computers and the environment.
