William Dan, a student in the MA in Translation and Localization Management program, recently published an article in Multilingual. The August 17, 2021 piece explains, “why language industry experts should avoid using ‘localization is best when unnoticed’ as a blanket statement.”

There is nothing ‘invisible’ about the work of language industry practitioners.

Dan makes the case for language service expert recognition, arguing that although common practice in the industry is to seek invisibility and a final product that does not seem like a translation, the paradigm should shift as “there is nothing ‘invisible’ about the work of language industry practitioners.” Language professionals are often underappreciated and underpaid, and their role is anything but passive and invisible. Their work requires skill, expertise, and knowledge. As Dan argues, it is time for the active attributes of the profession to be recognized and appreciated.
