Newly Deployed Russian Military Unit

Dr. Jeffrey Lewis and a team of students noticed the Russian invasion of Ukraine on Google Maps hours before it was officially announced, the Washington Post reports.

Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies professor Dr. Jeffrey Lewis and a team of Middlebury Institute research assistants and graduate students at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies observed an armed Russian vehicle unit lined up near Belgorod on radar imagery from Capella Space, which prompted them to investigate Google Maps data. They then realized a “traffic jam” was reported between the Russian city and the Ukraine border at 3:15 in the morning local time, suggesting that Russian troops were headed to Ukraine.
