Jeffrey Knopf, Middlebury Institute professor and program chair of Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies, was interviewed by CBC News on chemical weapons both broadly and in the specific context of Russia and Ukraine.

According to Professor Knopf, chemical weapons can take various forms and can be designed to either disperse quickly or linger. He says there is no clear military rationale for Russia to deploy chemical weapons, but with President Putin’s unpredictability, it can’t be ruled out.
