In the News, News Stories

Sarah Bidgood MANTPS ’16, director of the Eurasia Nonproliferation Program at the Institute’s James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, recently took part in a TEDx Talk titled “Nuclear Weapons and the War in Ukraine.”

The virtual talk, recorded April 7, 2022, was organized by the nonprofit TEDxMidAtlantic Salon in Washington, D.C. In separate presentations, Bidgood and nuclear security expert Emma Belcher, president of the Ploughshares Fund, addressed the possibility that Russia might deploy nuclear weapons in the course of the war in Ukraine. Host David Troy then led a Q&A in which the two women answered viewer questions on, among other topics, the history—and potential future—of nuclear diplomacy; hypothetical responses should Russia use tactical nuclear weapons, whether against either Ukraine or any of the NATO member states; and what Russia’s current stance might mean to states that are pursuing nuclear capabilities.
